Tim Tebow: A Man to Admire
82
With this being the beginning of the National Football League’s playoffs, I was inspired to write about one player who has drawn a great deal of attention this season. That player is the Denver Bronco’s Tim Tebow. Tebow is no stranger to controversy and attention. It has followed him since his days of college football at Florida and possibly even earlier than that. While the attention Tebow draws is a mix of positive and negative, none of it seems to bother him. The compliments don’t go to his head, and the insults don’t faze him.
For those of you who aren’t so familiar with Mr. Tebow, you may be wondering why he is the source of such controversy and publicity. For football reasons, he has been highlighted for his unorthodox style of play. He was told he would never succeed as a college quarterback, let alone an NFL quarterback. However, he has Heisman Trophy, two NCAAF Championships, and now has led his team into the NFL playoffs. While he still has many years ahead of him to judge his success, he has done pretty well so far.
The real controversy about Tebow is his faith. He is a self-proclaimed Christian, and he is not afraid to show it. It’s not that he shows it like the Pharisees in the Bible (with a more-holy than you attitude), but he shows it because that is truly how he lives his life. That wherein lies the issue. Tebow’s faith is genuine. Why is that an issue? I don’t have the answer to that question because it isn’t an issue to me. He doesn’t push his Christianity on anyone. He doesn’t tell everyone they are sinners and need to be like him. He simply lives his life in a way that he believes honors God.
But once again we question why this should be a problem. We have all seen the guy with the rainbow hair and John 3:16 sign in the end zone of football games. We have seen the baseball players crossing their chest before every at bat. We have seen the players that thank God and give Him all the credit after a victory. So why is there such backlash towards Tebow? It’s like I stated before; his faith is real. With other profession athletes, it usually just seems like an act. They cross their heart as part of some routine, or they simply thank God because it seems like the thing to do. We aren’t really convinced of their faith, so it gets brushed off. With Tebow we can tell it’s real. He lives it, and people are intimidated by this. For some reason, it generates fear in them.
I will admit that I used to hate Tebow. However, it wasn’t for anything having to do with his beliefs. My dislike stemmed from his dismantling of my Ohio State Buckeyes in the championship football game. My opinion of him has since changed. That is all in the past, and I can respect his athleticism and college football achievements. Even more respectable, though, is his faith. It is impossible for me to dislike him. He is far too genuine of a person. I cannot help but admire him for the man he is.
The story of Tebow may seem too good to be true, but I can ensure you it is. If you don’t believe me, check it out for yourself. This is a man who spent his spring breaks during college on mission trips to orphanages while most of his peers were on some beach getting drunk. If you happened to catch ESPN’s recent Sports Center special on him, you would see how he really acts on the field from constantly encouraging teammates, singing to God during the game, or always being positive with the opponent. In October, three Muslim brothers paid for a billboard to be put up to encourage the Broncos to have Tebow be the starting quarterback. Is it a little odd for Muslims to be promoting such an outspoken Christian? They were simply appreciating his football abilities.
Tebow’s life really is a special one. I mentioned earlier that he was told he would never make it as a professional quarterback. Before he was even born, his mom was told he wouldn’t make it. She had a high risk pregnancy and was encouraged to abort him but wouldn’t due to her faith. His pro-life commercial for the 2010 Super Bowl caused conflict. It’s pretty obvious that Tebow has led a special life. With all the odds he has overcome, it makes one question if there has been some Devine intervention. From his birth, to his college career, to all the miraculous come-back victories he has led the Broncos to this season, you can’t help but think God is on his side. You may not agree or support his faith, but it’s hard to not find his life to be a pretty special story.

See I think we all forcus the controversy on his faith, and it really shouldn't be. I'm in no way a believer, but for Americans, especially Americans, to hate on a guy for loving god is pretty much absurd. I know you dont personally, I'm just saying from the media in general. I used to like watching Tebow on TV, he was something to see in college. I knew the guy was a winner, I just never wanted to hear about it for the reasons that be, haters doing what haters do, hating. We should just be loving watching the guy win, but since in the 2000's it's crazy to love your god in the NFL. Again I know you don't feel this way, I'm just speculating on the situation as a whole. Country stars can win awards under god, but old Timmy Tebow can't have him help win a football game. Crazy how this country works huh? Great hub, thanks for the read, voted up!

Even though I don't like Tebow as a football player, I do respect the fact that he appears to be a good person. I am a huge football fan and I could care less who or what any players pray to.
I think it's amusing how any one athlete can generate so much publicity. That really shows you were our country's mindset is. I was an athlete for many years of my life and I'm still a huge sports fan. But one thing I've come to understand; sports is recreation and not life and death. I wish the rest of our country could put this into perspective.
Nice hub
Completely agree about how sports are a recreation not a life and death cooldad. Tebow has hes beliefs and u cant hate a person because of his or her beliefs. And the publicity shouldn't even be on his beliefs. I mean sports channels should really find something else interesting than his kneeling down after and game and thanking God for the win. Come on now!!
@caleb: i totally agree. From what everyone says, he's about the nicest, most respectful guy on the planet, who cares if he prays? I've seen hundreds of other athletes pray on the field, why does it matter now? I think white America is bored and they want something to cheer about.
Totally agree cooldad! Maybe the public is just hating on him because hes genuine and they want him to mess up so they can laugh at him. Idk! But just because someone kneels down doesn't mean u have to mock him!
Yes Joel i did. Its pretty sad when people start saying that kind of stuff about him. He is committing no crime and if he loses a game to a VERY good team that doesn't mean u have to curse God and drag Tebows name in the dirt!
Yes, yes it is
Good player/bad player, good person/bad person - why does the media have to judge? Isn't this a country where our religious beliefs are free? I think it's a wonderful thing that this football player isn't afraid to pray in public! It's a good influence on kids who have seen some not so great athlete antics lately.
Good point, good hub! Voted up.
Tebow on the rise hope he make it through the playoffs and on to the superbol
He's a baller, He's a gamer
He can't be stopped
Unleash him, his doubters,
the floor with them is mopped
I hate to brag, but
I said that Broncos would win
I,m not saying he did it all
But they do depend on him
So now, one more game
let the haters all start
Unleash Tim Tebow
He will pick them apart
With no mistakes, like in the first game
the Broncos must play right
Doyou think that New England
is experiencing a fright.
I think Tim Tebow is great and deserves respect from everyone for being confident enough to stand up for what he believes in and not waiver or falter when naysayers attack him. I've never net him but would be honored to do so.
The references or instances in his life of 3:16 are wonderful, even if somewhat bizarre. I like the guy.
If Tebow throws for 350 yards this week, that will total 666 yards for two games. What happens then???????
In a world that loves athletes and pays them huge sums to play a game, it is refreshing to find someone so humble, so down to earth, so determined. He has overcome huge odds to get where he is. He believes in God. That's almost as bad as big Ben's sexual attacks, Tom Brady's abandoning his pregnant girlfriend, dog fighting, drugs, guns, cheating, and the rest of the crap the NFL wants us to admire. I will be rooting for Tim Tebow, Win, Lose, or Draw. He has already won. I'm grateful for his ability to verbalize his Christian beliefs in a cynical world.
Not into sports but I did enjoy reading this hub.
I so love Tim Tebow and all he stands for. It would be great if we all had the courage he has shown to stand up for what we believe in.
-I agree. But hey, haters make the world go round.
Even though he was drubbed today, Tim Tebow is a miracle. This was an excellent Hub. I admire it. It really makes my Tebow Hubs Null and Dull. Youve inspired me to be more in depth. Thank you, and I look forward to reading more from you
Timmy can only get better
I can't wait till next year
get him more weapons
and the cheering you will hear.
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! You rock!
Definitely sharing!
As an Athiest, I don't understand the hype surrounding Tim Tebow? He had a great run in the second half of the season last year, but at the end of the day he doesn't have the skills to be a starting QB in the league, yet he creates a media circus unrivaled by any other player? He might be the most overrated athlete in sports, and he is just a backup QB... so silly! I will telll you what though, if he wins the starting job from Sanchez and leads the Jets to the Super Bowl, I will start going to church the very next Sunday ..
Like I said .. if he keeps winning .. I will start going to church!

Thank you for writing this great hub. It is hard not to admire someone who stands for his beliefs the way No. 15 does.
